Checkers is one of the oldest and most beloved board games in the world, and you can play checkers online free right here against a challenging AI opponent. Move your pieces diagonally, jump over your opponent's pieces to capture them, and crown your kings to dominate the board. The rules are simple enough for anyone to learn in minutes, but mastering checkers strategy takes real skill. Controlling the center, planning multi-jump captures, and knowing when to push for kings versus when to hold your position -- these are the decisions that separate casual players from experts. Our AI opponent provides a genuine challenge at every level. Whether you're looking to practice checkers basics or test advanced strategies, you'll find a worthy opponent waiting. Jump in for a quick game during a break, or settle in for a longer session of tactical dueling.

How to Play Checkers

You play as one color on a standard 8x8 board, with pieces placed on the dark squares. Pieces move diagonally forward, one square at a time. To capture an opponent's piece, jump over it diagonally to the empty square beyond -- if another jump is available from the landing square, you must take it as part of a multi-jump.

Click a piece to select it, and the game will highlight all legal moves. Click a highlighted square to move there. If a capture is available, you must make a capture -- this is a mandatory rule in standard checkers.

When one of your pieces reaches the far side of the board, it becomes a king. Kings can move and capture diagonally in both directions, making them far more powerful than regular pieces. Protecting your back row while pushing pieces forward to crown them is a key part of checkers strategy.

Checkers Tips & Strategies

  • Control the center of the board -- edge pieces have limited mobility.
  • Keep your back row intact as long as possible to prevent the AI from crowning kings.
  • Look for multi-jump opportunities to capture several pieces in one turn.
  • Trade pieces when you have a material advantage to simplify the board.
  • Push pieces toward the king row when the path is safe, but do not rush recklessly.
  • Set traps by offering a piece that leads the AI into a losing multi-jump exchange.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to capture if a jump is available?

Yes. In standard checkers rules (which this game follows), if a capture is available, you must take it. If multiple captures are available, you can choose which one to make, but you cannot skip capturing entirely.

What is the difference between a regular piece and a king?

Regular pieces can only move and capture diagonally forward. Kings, which are crowned when a piece reaches the opposite end of the board, can move and capture diagonally in both directions. Kings are much more powerful and versatile.

How do I beat the AI at checkers?

Focus on controlling the center, protecting your back row, and setting up multi-jump captures. Try to trade pieces when you have more material, and always look for opportunities to crown kings while preventing the AI from doing the same.
