Backgammon

Strategymedium

Backgammon is one of the oldest board games in the world, combining dice-rolling luck with deep strategic decision-making. Play Backgammon online free against an AI opponent and experience the timeless thrill of racing your checkers home while blocking and hitting your opponent. Roll the dice and move your checkers around the board toward your home board. Land on your opponent's lone checkers to send them to the bar. Build "primes" — consecutive occupied points — to block their movement. Once all your checkers are home, start bearing off to win the race. Every roll presents meaningful choices: advance aggressively, play defensively, or set up future moves. The blend of luck and strategy means no two games play out the same way. It's the perfect game for anyone who loves dice games and strategic planning.

Controls: Click a checker to select, click a valid point to move. Roll dice to start each turn.

How to Play Backgammon

Each player has 15 checkers that move in opposite directions around 24 triangular points. Roll two dice and move checkers by the number shown on each die — you can move one checker twice or two checkers once each.

You can land on any point that is empty, has your own checkers, or has exactly one opponent checker (a "blot"). Landing on a blot sends it to the bar, and that player must re-enter it from the start before making other moves.

Move all 15 checkers into your home board (last 6 points), then start bearing off by rolling numbers matching their positions. First player to bear off all checkers wins! Click a checker to select it, then click a valid destination point to move.

Backgammon Tips & Strategies

  • Avoid leaving blots (single checkers) in dangerous positions — they can be hit and sent back.
  • Build primes — consecutive points with 2+ checkers — to block your opponent's movement.
  • The 5-point and bar-point (7-point) are the most valuable points to control.
  • Don't be afraid to hit opponent blots — sending them back is a powerful tempo play.
  • In a race, use large doubles to catch up; play safely when you're ahead.
  • Calculate your pip count vs your opponent to know if you're ahead or behind in the race.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the bar work in Backgammon?

When your checker is hit (an opponent lands on your lone checker), it goes to the bar. Before making any other moves, you must re-enter from the opponent's home board by rolling a number matching an open point. You're stuck until you can enter.

What is bearing off in Backgammon?

Once all 15 of your checkers are in your home board (points 1-6), you can start bearing off. Roll the dice and remove checkers from points matching the numbers. If you roll higher than your highest point, bear off from the highest occupied point.

How does the AI play in this Backgammon game?

The AI evaluates positions using common Backgammon heuristics — prioritizing primes, hitting blots when safe, and bearing off efficiently. It provides a solid challenge suitable for beginners and intermediate players.
