FreeCell

Casualhard

FreeCell is the thinking player's solitaire — a card game where nearly every deal is winnable with enough skill and foresight. Unlike Klondike solitaire where luck plays a major role, FreeCell deals all 52 cards face-up from the start, giving you complete information to plan your moves. The game uses four free cells as temporary storage and four foundation piles where you build up each suit from Ace to King. The strategic challenge lies in managing your limited free cells while moving cards between eight tableau columns to uncover the cards you need. Play FreeCell online free in your browser and test your strategic thinking. With no hidden cards and no luck involved, every win (and every loss) is entirely up to you. It's the perfect brain workout for puzzle lovers.

How to Play FreeCell

All 52 cards are dealt face-up into 8 tableau columns. Your goal is to move all cards to the four foundation piles, building each suit up from Ace to King. In the tableau, build down in alternating colors (red on black, black on red).

Click a card to select it, then click a valid destination to move it. You can move cards to free cells (one card each), to foundations, or onto other tableau cards following the alternating color rule. Only the top card of each column or free cell can be moved.

You can move multiple cards at once if enough free cells and empty columns are available. The game calculates the maximum stack you can move based on available space. Use free cells wisely — they're your most valuable resource.

FreeCell Tips & Strategies

  • Plan several moves ahead before touching any cards — FreeCell rewards foresight.
  • Keep free cells open as long as possible — they're your lifeline.
  • Try to empty a tableau column early — empty columns are even more valuable than free cells.
  • Prioritize uncovering Aces and Twos to start building foundations early.
  • Build long descending sequences in the tableau when possible to move them efficiently.
  • Avoid filling all four free cells — you'll get stuck with no room to maneuver.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every FreeCell game winnable?

Nearly! About 99.999% of FreeCell deals are solvable. The famous unsolvable deal #11982 is one of very few exceptions in the standard numbering. If you lose, it almost certainly means a better sequence of moves exists.

What makes FreeCell different from regular solitaire?

In FreeCell, all cards are dealt face-up, so there's no hidden information. This means the game is almost entirely skill-based rather than luck-based. The four free cells provide temporary storage that you must manage strategically.

How do I move multiple cards at once?

You can move a stack of properly ordered cards (alternating colors, descending) if you have enough free cells and empty columns to theoretically move them one at a time. The game calculates this automatically.
