Go

Strategyhard

Go is the oldest and most profound strategy board game in existence, with origins stretching back over 4,000 years in ancient China. Despite having remarkably simple rules, Go produces a depth of strategic complexity that exceeds even chess — it was the last classic board game where AI surpassed human champions. Play Go online free on our 9x9 board, perfect for learning and quick games. Place black and white stones to surround territory and capture your opponent's groups. The player who controls more territory when the board fills up wins. Our 9x9 board is the traditional size for beginners and provides games that last 15-20 minutes — much faster than the standard 19x19 board while teaching the same strategic concepts. How to Play Go

Players alternate placing stones on empty intersections of the grid. Black plays first. Once placed, stones don't move — they can only be captured and removed.

A stone or connected group of stones is captured when all its adjacent empty points (liberties) are occupied by the opponent. Captured stones are removed from the board and count as points for the capturing player.

The game ends when both players pass consecutively. Score is calculated by counting the empty intersections each player has surrounded (territory) plus any captured stones. The Ko rule prevents immediate recapture of a single stone that would create an infinite loop.

Go Tips & Strategies

  • Control the corners first — they're the easiest to surround with fewer stones.
  • After corners, extend along the edges, then contest the center last.
  • Keep your groups connected — isolated stones are vulnerable to capture.
  • Count liberties — a group with more liberties is harder to capture.
  • Don't try to save every stone — sometimes sacrificing a small group gains a larger advantage.
  • Place stones on the 3rd line for territory, 4th line for influence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Go and how is it different from chess?

Go is an ancient strategy game where players place stones to surround territory. Unlike chess, pieces don't move after placement and the goal is area control rather than checkmate. Go has far more possible positions than chess.

Why is the board 9x9 instead of 19x19?

The standard Go board is 19x19, but 9x9 is the traditional learning size. Games are shorter (15 minutes vs 1-2 hours) while teaching the same fundamental concepts of territory, capture, and strategic thinking.

What is the Ko rule?

Ko prevents infinite loops. If capturing a single stone would recreate the exact previous board position, that recapture is forbidden for one turn. You must play elsewhere first before recapturing the Ko.
